The most incredible experience of our lives
We knew that Lion Camp was going to be luxurious, and we knew the game viewing in South Luangwa would be great, but we were unprepared for just how amazing our 4 days at Lion Camp would be.
We drove ourselves to the camp, and walked up to the expansive deck. The refurbishments this year have created a stunningly designed communal area that looks down on a watering hole. When we arrived we counted 25 elephants drinking and playing within 20 yards of the property.
We then staying in room #1 and were blown away. We had a 270 degree unobstructed view of the park (not all have this) and more seating areas inside and on our private deck than we could hope to use in a month. The outdoor tub was the icing on the cake.
The game drives and walking safaris were incredible as expected; leopards, lions (and their dinner) and everything else you could hope for. Thomas, our guide, spoke perfect English as was the most knowledgeable of the guides we’ve had on our 3 safaris so far. The term Lion Camp is certainly well earned – one morning as we were leaving on a drive, a pride of Lions was asleep just across from the breakfast tables on the other side of the watering holes.
Finally, Wayne and Vicky are the best hosts you could have. Attentive and fun, they created an experience for us that we will remember forever.
Better Than Ever
We have been on safari in several southern African countries and the various landscapes of the South Luangwa are among the most beautiful.
We visited Lion Camp in 2014 and having enjoyed the remote location and lack of other vehicles, were keen to return to experience its new incarnation. After a complete rebuild, it opened in June this year offering a new level of comfort, with attention to detail evident in every aspect of the operation. We were very, very impressed. Each suite is stylish and spacious with conveniences such as banks of sockets for charging camera and other batteries plus (a real surprise given the remoteness) strong wi-fi for those who like to keep in touch. Game drives follow the traditional morning/evening pattern but they choose to serve only hot drinks/muffin/oats in the morning before heading out and then offering a continental or cooked breakfast on return at about 10am. A light lunch follows at around 2.30 before heading out again later in the afternoon. No afternoon tea and cake! The essential sundowners are enjoyed at a suitable spot and dinner is served on return at about 8pm. We found (with our waistlines as ample evidence) that the quality and presentation of the food to be absolutely outstanding. This was fine dining of restaurant quality – healthy and imaginative. Service was friendly and efficient. How all this can be provided in this location provokes admiration. Note that there are no credit card facilities. We thoroughly enjoyed Lion Camp and would recommend it without hesitation.
Lion camp revisited
Revisiting Lion Camp after a few years was great . The revamp of the camp is stunning and the larger communal area was stunning.
The rooms were beautiful and the beds exremrly comfortable and clean I slept like a baby whilst listening to the hippos munching and lions calling.
It was amazing to see the storks at the waterhole with the Fish Eagles swooping to steal their catch .
Lots of wild dog and then lions under a tree with a leopard up the tree during the daytime.
Innocent was our guide and he was lovely , very friendly and happy and listened to what we wanted . He was full of interesting information and made it very interesting we thoroughly enjoyed his trips and he bonded very well with our boys.
The food was amazing and we felt very full !
We saw two successful lion hunts two nights in a row which was incredible and then saw a huge croc trying to hunt the lions eating the impala!
I have incredible photographs and yet again lovely family memories of a great family trip. ,I firmly believe that a family safari is the best family bonding holiday where you get to spend quality time together and all the family are entertained . The kids also enjoyed using the snooker table. I had lovely chats to the staff and heard interesting stories . I even saw the most stunning shooting star whilst having a drink on the deck .
