Our story
Early Establishment
In the late 1960s, Norman Carr established the site as a base for walking safaris and anti-poaching scouts. Featuring three round rondavel-style structures, it became South Luangwa’s first permanent accommodations and marked the beginning of efforts to promote conservation-focused tourism in the region.

Current Operations
From Norman Carr’s pioneering vision to its modern-day operation, Lion Camp has evolved into a premier safari destination, staying true to its commitment to conservation and authentic wilderness experiences.
The lodge sits near one of the last remaining water sources in the dry season, attracting large concentrations of wildlife and ensuring exclusive safari experiences with minimal vehicle traffic. South Luangwa is home to thriving big cat populations, including lions and leopards, as well as some of the world’s largest populations of hippos and crocodiles, all thriving in the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons.
Conservation efforts have bolstered numbers of endangered African wild dogs, offering rare opportunities to witness these social predators. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 bird species, from Carmine bee-eaters to Red-billed Queleas, as well as dramatic fishing parties in the oxbow lagoons.
The park’s varied terrains—from open plains and riverbanks to ebony tree groves and ancient baobabs—offer a stunning backdrop for its wildlife. Endemic species such as Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest, and Crawshay’s Zebra add to the richness of this extraordinary ecosystem.
Operating during the dry season from May through October, Lion Camp provides uninterrupted access to one of Africa’s most secluded and wildlife-rich regions on the planet.
Lion Camp’s ethos is rooted in Conservation and Sustainability, Community and Collaboration, and Unforgettable Guest Experiences, guiding its mission to protect nature, empower people, and deliver transformative safari adventures.
Eco-friendly practices
The lodge integrates eco-friendly practices, including solar power and biodegradable products, while partnering with organizations like Conservation South Luangwa and Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust to protect endangered species like African wild dogs and promote human-wildlife coexistence.
